The Biggest Question The ‘Agatha All Along’ Finale Failed To Answer

I had my issues with the Agatha All Along finale, a series I otherwise liked a whole lot. I was disappointed it didn’t seem to make much progress in either the return of Scarlet Witch or even the hunt for Tommy Maximoff, more or less ending up where it started.

But outside of its progression, or lack thereof, there were two main open questions that the show did not answer. The first I’ve already touched on, the show not diving into the full history between Agatha and Rio, where the first time we see them they have already clearly had some sort of past relationship. But we have no idea about the context in which that started.

The biggest unanswered question, however, one that the finale didn’t even hint at despite it coming up early in the show, was how exactly Agatha got the Darkhold, essentially the most powerful supernatural tool in existence, and one Wanda studied relentless in her Scarlet Witch era to surge her power and accelerate her evil turn.

It was theorized early on by the other witches that Agatha traded the life of her son for access to the Darkhold, which is how she got her hands on the book from some evil entity (Rio? Mephisto?). But in the finale we learn that her acquisition of the Darkhold had…nothing to do with that. Her deal with Rio was a bit of time for her son, possibly with the caveat that she has to keep feeding her bodies (this was not made explicit, but it’s implied when she says she’s doing it to “survive”). And again, outside of a brief name-drop, Mephisto has nothing to do with this show.

Clearly she did not trade her son for the Darkhold. But we know nothing about how she got it, and now floating around as a ghost, it does not seem terribly likely we will get an answer to that, with the bulk of her story over with her own miniseries having ended. We don’t know where she got it, when she got it, how she got it, or who gave it to her. Given that a massive reveal of WandaVision was her having the Darkhold and then Wanda acquiring it, it very much seems strange that in a lengthy accounting of her history it simply never comes up at all. It feels like it was cut for time, but that’s…a really important thing to cut for time.

Will this ever come up again? We have a Vision show in the works, and it seems unlikely to be a topic there. Maybe in a Wiccan series. Maybe in a Wanda movie. But as for an explanation about how Agatha got it, it just doesn’t seem like that’s in the cards, which is deeply strange given both the events of WandaVision and Agatha All Along. That felt like a question that needed an answer, and it didn’t get one.
