Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani Appointed Next Chief of Defence Staff
by Northlines · NorthlinesNew Delhi, May 9: The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), the Ministry of Defence announced on Friday. He will succeed General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure concludes on May 30, 2026, and will also take over as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs.
Currently serving as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat, Lt Gen Subramani brings extensive operational and strategic experience. He has previously held key positions, including Vice Chief of the Army Staff and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command.
The appointment comes at a crucial time as India’s armed forces continue structural reforms aimed at enhancing jointness, integration, and operational efficiency among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Ministry of Defence said the decision reflects continuity in leadership with strong operational and policymaking experience.
Lt Gen Subramani has been serving as Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat since September 1, 2025, contributing to high-level defence planning and national security coordination. Earlier, as Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 2024 to July 2025, he played a key role in operational readiness and force management.
During his tenure as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024, he oversaw operations in a strategically significant region, strengthening his field command credentials.
The post of Chief of Defence Staff was created to promote synergy among the three services and ensure coordinated planning, procurement, and operations. The CDS also serves as the principal military adviser to the government and heads the Department of Military Affairs, playing a central role in defence modernisation and theatre command development.
The leadership transition comes as India accelerates efforts to streamline defence procurement, strengthen joint operational doctrines, and enhance preparedness in emerging domains such as cyber and space warfare. (Agencies)
