New Delhi: The Centre calls for an all-party meeting on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing West Asia crisis, sources said, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed Parliament on the issue.

In his statement in the Lok Sabha, Modi warned that the difficult global conditions arising from the conflict are likely to persist and urged the nation to remain prepared and united, as during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He highlighted concerns over the impact on fuel supplies, fertilisers, national security and Indian nationals residing in the region, outlining steps taken by the government to minimise disruption for citizens.

Reiterating India’s commitment to peace, the Prime Minister said dialogue and diplomacy remain the only way forward and stressed the need for de-escalation and cessation of hostilities.

He also called for a unified voice from Parliament on the crisis, noting that West Asia is crucial for India as nearly one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries, with many serving as crew members on commercial ships in the region.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress criticized Modi’s statement, accusing him of failing to condemn US-Israeli air strikes on Iran and terming his remarks as inadequate. (Agencies)
