Ex-CJ Sushila Karki Likely to Become Nepal’s Interim PM

Kathmandu, Sept 12: Nepal’s former Chief Justice Sushila Karki is likely to be appointed interim prime minister following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli amid violent youth-led protests, Reuters reported citing sources.

The agitation, which erupted Monday over a social media ban, escalated into a full-blown anti-government movement despite the ban’s reversal. At least 31 people have been killed and more than 1,033 injured, with protesters torching government buildings and lawmakers’ residences.

Karki, ousted as chief justice in 2017 by then-PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and MPs just months before retirement, has emerged as Gen Z protesters’ preferred choice for prime minister.

Sources said President Ramchandra Paudel and army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel have been consulting constitutional experts, with Karki’s appointment expected after a meeting at the president’s residence at 9 am (3:15 GMT).
