GUWAHATI, May 12: Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday, becoming the first non-Congress leader in the state to achieve this milestone.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office at a ceremony held at the Veterinary Ground in Khanapara, Guwahati. Alongside Sarma, four MLAs—Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog from the BJP, Atul Bora, and Charan Boro—also took oath as ministers.

Neog, Bora and Boro were part of Sarma’s previous cabinet, while Teli, a former Union minister, has returned to state politics. In the earlier government, Neog handled finance, Bora oversaw agriculture, and Boro managed the transport portfolio.

This marks the third consecutive government in the state led by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which first came to power in 2016 under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal.

The NDA secured a landslide victory in the recent elections, winning 102 out of 126 seats in the assembly, with the BJP alone claiming 82 seats, while its allies—the AGP and the BPF—won 10 seats each.

Officials said over one lakh people were expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Security was tightened across Guwahati, with central and state forces deployed, and arrangements coordinated by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota. (Agencies)
