Lok Sabha Adjourned Till 2 PM amid Opposition protest over alleged police action on NEET protesters

New Delhi, Aug 6: The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM on Thursday amid uproar by Opposition members over alleged police action during students’ protests related to the NEET issue.

The proceedings began at 11 AM with Speaker Om Birla paying tribute to the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which took place 81 years ago. The House observed a moment of silence in memory of those killed in the attacks.

Birla said the bombings on August 6 and 9, 1945, claimed the lives of lakhs of innocent civilians and caused immense suffering. He said the devastating impact of nuclear weapons was witnessed by the world for the first time through the attacks and reiterated Parliament’s commitment to a world free of weapons of mass destruction.

When the Speaker attempted to begin Question Hour, Opposition members raised the issue of alleged police action against students during protests over NEET and demanded a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Birla urged the members to allow Question Hour, saying it was an important part of parliamentary proceedings that provided every member an opportunity to raise issues.

He said Parliament was meant for discussion, questions and meaningful exchange of ideas. However, as the protests and sloganeering continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2 PM.

The Opposition has been pressing the government to respond to allegations concerning police action during recent student protests. (Agencies)
