Delhi Assembly Issues Notices to Punjab DGP, Two Senior Officers Over FIR Against Kapil Mishra
by Northlines · NorthlinesNew Delhi, Jan 10: Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Saturday said notices have been issued to three senior Punjab Police officers, seeking their replies within 48 hours over the registration of an FIR against Delhi Law Minister Kapil Mishra using a video clip of the Assembly proceedings.
The notices have been served on the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP), the Special DGP (Cyber Crime), and the Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, for an alleged “breach of the privileges of the Delhi Assembly,” Gupta said at a press conference.
Terming the action by Punjab Police as “unfortunate,” the Speaker said the use of the Assembly’s video recording—property of the Delhi Legislative Assembly—for lodging an FIR had hurt the dignity of the House. He added that further action against the concerned officers would be decided after receiving their replies.
The controversy stems from a video clip of Assembly proceedings used by Kapil Mishra and several BJP MLAs, alleging that Leader of Opposition Atishi insulted Sikh Guru Guru Tegh Bahadur during a debate held earlier this week. The debate pertained to a Delhi government programme organised in November last year to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of the ninth Sikh Guru.
Subsequently, the Jalandhar Police Commissionerate registered an FIR against Mishra and others for allegedly uploading and circulating an “edited and doctored” version of Atishi’s speech.
Gupta said the Delhi Assembly has sought all related documents, including the forensic report on the basis of which Punjab Police claimed the video was doctored. He also condemned the AAP government in Punjab, accusing it of misusing the state police machinery.
Meanwhile, BJP MLAs have demanded the cancellation of Atishi’s Assembly membership, alleging that she insulted the Sikh Guru during the proceedings. (Agencies)
