Veteran Actor Asrani Passes Away at 84
by Northlines · NorthlinesMumbai, Oct 20: Legendary actor Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, passed away on Monday at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness. His last rites were performed at the Santacruz Crematorium in Mumbai.
Just hours before his demise, the veteran actor had shared a Diwali message on social media, extending festive wishes to his fans.
A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Asrani’s illustrious career spanned over five decades, during which he acted in more than 350 films across Hindi, Gujarati, and Rajasthani cinema.
Though he began his journey with serious and supporting roles, Asrani became one of Indian cinema’s most beloved comic actors. His performances in classics like Sholay and Chupke Chupke are etched in public memory, particularly his iconic portrayal of the bumbling jailor in Sholay—a character that became part of Indian pop culture.
Known for his impeccable comic timing and expressive persona, Asrani worked alongside legends such as Mehmood, Rajesh Khanna, and Govinda, earning a place in every era of Hindi comedy. He also explored direction, helming films like Chala Murari Hero Banne and Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar.
