New Delhi, Dec 12: The Lok Sabha was adjourned till noon on Friday after paying tributes to veteran Congress leader and former Speaker Shivraj Patil, who passed away earlier in the day at the age of 90. Speaker Om Birla announced Patil’s demise as the House convened and led members in remembering his long public service as Lok Sabha Speaker, Union Home Minister, and Governor.

The House also honoured the nine security personnel who were martyred in the December 13, 2001 Parliament terror attack. Birla recalled the sacrifice of personnel from the Parliament Security Service, Delhi Police, and CRPF who died defending the nation’s highest democratic institution.

Emphasising the country’s resolve against terrorism, the Speaker said the House “reaffirms its unwavering commitment to safeguard India’s unity, integrity, and sovereignty.” Members observed a brief silence to honour Patil and the martyrs before the House was adjourned till noon.

Shivraj Patil, a senior Congress figure, served as Lok Sabha Speaker from 1991 to 1996, later becoming Union Home Minister and Governor of Rajasthan. The 2001 Parliament attack remains a defining moment in India’s history, marking a grave assault on democracy and claiming nine lives. (Agencies)
