THERE will be a recount in St Helier Central after the number of votes between fourth and fifth place was just 21.

The gap between Deputy-elect Lee Carpenter – a Reform Jersey representative – and Robin Ward falls within the 1% margin of error under which a recount can be called for.

The results for St Helier Central were not declared until Monday afternoon after the count was halted in the early hours of Monday morning.

Both Mr Ward and Reform Jersey candidate Deputy-elect Carpenter were standing for election for the first time.

Reform Jersey had, initially, secured a clean sweep of the district with Deputy-elect Carpenter joined by incumbent Deputies Carina Alves, Lynsday Feltham and Catherine Curtis. Claire de Than, Cameron Monro and John Ttokkallos were also standing in the district.

The recount will take place tomorrow at St Helier Town Hall, starting at 10am. Until the recount has taken place, Mr Carpenter remains as a Member-elect.

The last time a recount was called due to the number of votes being within the 1% margin was in 2014, when Sarah Ferguson was pipped to the final Senatorial spot by Philip Ozouf, which had to take place on a Saturday due to all Islandwide votes needing to be rexamined. In 2018, Moz Scott could have called for a recount of the Senatorial vote after finishing within 123 votes of Sam Mézec, but opted not to.
