ST Saviour Deputy poll-topper Malcolm Ferey said he was “absolutely over the moon” at being re-elected and topping the poll was “the icing on the cake”.

Accounting for his victory, he said: “I can only go from what people have told me, which was that they found me hard working, authentic and a genuine person. They said ‘we need people like you in there’ and what more can I add?

“It was a long campaign but, in our parish, on the whole it was very good natured, challenging at times but there was no mud slinging.

“At all the doors I knocked at, the response was positive, and some people said that the only reason they were voting was to support me, which I’ve never heard before and was really heartening.”

In terms of political ambition now, Deputy Ferey said he was committed to both the parish and the wider Island.

“I attended every parish meeting over the past four years, except two, and I sit on the accounts committee that sets the rate. I have also held most assistant minister roles in the past two governments, so I have built up a broad experience.

“For this term, it will be parish first, obviously, and then I have to wait and see. How the next government is going to be formed always seems to be conducted in the shadows, so, to be honest, it is too early to make a call on that.”

Runner-up Deputy Louise Doublet said that the election left her feeling “hopeful”.

She said: “My most overwhelming feeling is gratitude that the people of St Saviour have elected me again and gratitude that I can continue to do the work that I am doing for them.

“All the people who supported me, not just voting but actually volunteering for my campaign as well. I have felt really humbled by that.”

She added that across the parish, she had met voters who felt “frustrated, feeling a bit disillusioned” but who she had conversations with and later saw turn up at the polling station – “which gives me hope”.

She added that topics that resonated on the doorstep, besides the cost of living, included health and people’s wellbeing.

On roles she would be interested in, Deputy Doublet said it depended on who became Chief Minister, adding: “I would like to fulfill any role that the Assembly will appoint me to that will help children and families, and work that I’ve always done  around equality and equity.”

She was also interested in supporting disabled people and carers, she added, where she said Deputies Catherine Curtis and Senatorial poll-topper Helen Miles had done “really good work”.

Both Deputies Ferey and Doublet said that they were looking forward to working with Constable-elect of St Saviour Dave Curtis as well as fellow St Saviour Deputies Chris Leck and Robert Parker.

Deputy-elect Parker, who owns the Hotel de France and aligned himself with the Value Jersey movement, said he was looking forward tackling the “daunting” amount of changes that needed to be made.

He added that he wanted to work with everyone in the Assembly rather than just his fellow followers of Value Jersey, which he described as a “sustainable vision for the future of Jersey”.

“Jersey feels slightly rudderless at the moment and we need to tackle the difficult decisions that are easy to avoid,” he said.

Deputy-elect Parker said he did not have any specific role in mind in the new Assembly and felt, the morning after the election, “at that bidding stage before a game of bridge”.

He added that he was looking forward to “rolling up his sleeves” and working with fellow elected representatives old and new.
