A woman is dead and her estranged husband is behind bars after an incident Monday near Trail, B.C.

RCMP say they were called to a home in Montrose, east of Trail, for a report of a man assaulting a woman on the front lawn.

Responding emergency crews found Lindsay Christine Danchella suffering from “significant injuries.”

She died shortly afterward at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital.

Danchella's estranged husband was arrested at the scene and taken to cells at the Trail RCMP detachment. The BC RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit was called in and took command of the file.

Crown prosecutors have now charged Donald James Danchella, 46, with one count of second-degree murder.

He is scheduled for a bail hearing Tuesday afternoon, but that will likely be delayed.

“The securing of charge approval was the culmination of the tireless efforts involving investigators from the Southeast District Major Crime Unit, BC RCMP Forensic Identification Services, and members of the Trail RCMP,” said Major Crime Unit commander, Staff Sgt. Jason Smart.
