President John Mahama has called on Ghanaians to be measured in their comments and avoid making remarks that could negatively impact the mental health of Black Stars players following the team’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars sealed their spot at next year’s tournament after a 1-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday night at the Accra Sports Stadium, becoming the 21st team overall and the fifth from Africa to book their ticket to the World Cup to be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

A precise low pass from Thomas Partey was turned in by Mohammed Kudus from close range to secure Ghana’s qualification, sparking jubilant celebrations across Accra as the team confirmed their fifth World Cup appearance.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, President Mahama expressed his delight at the achievement but urged supporters to show restraint in their criticisms of players.

"These days of social media, people can say hurtful things that will affect the mental health of the players. Let us refrain from those things and support the Black Stars to the hilt," he said.

The President acknowledged that fans are entitled to their opinions but encouraged constructive criticism instead of insults.

Ghana will learn their group opponents on December 5, 2025, when the World Cup draw is held in Washington, D.C. Mahama also noted with pride that this marks the second time under his presidency that Black Stars have qualified for the World Cup, the first being for the 2014 tournament in Brazil.
