Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren is hoping for better luck in front of goal when Ghana face Mali in a crucial Group C clash at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Ghana must bounce back after a 2-0 defeat to defending champions South Africa in their opening game, where the Black Queens created chances but failed to convert.

Björkegren, speaking at a pre-match press conference alongside midfielder Jennifer Cudjoe, believes his side were unlucky not to score and hopes that changes when they face Mali on Friday, July 11 at 16:00 GMT.

“We hit the bar twice [against South Africa] and we did everything right if we take away the most important thing — to score goals,” Björkegren said. “Hopefully, we will have a little bit more luck in the next round.”

Mali, who sit third in Group C after a 1-0 win over Tanzania, will be looking to seal qualification to the next stage with a win over Ghana. The Black Queens, bottom of the group, must win to keep their tournament hopes alive.
