Former Ghana midfielder Michael Essien believes England have put together an exceptionally strong squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, acknowledging the quality of the Three Lions ahead of Ghana's Group L showdown.

Speaking to SkySports, the Chelsea legend, who spent nine years in English football, offered his assessment of the opposition his country will face on June 23.

"On a serious note, I think they have assembled the best players they could to represent the country," Essien said. "So yeah, it's going to be an exciting one. We just have to sit back and enjoy the show."

Essien, who made over 250 appearances for Chelsea, knows English football intimately. His praise for the squad assembled by manager Thomas Tuchel carries weight, given his experience competing against the best England has produced during his playing days.

However, the former Real Madrid midfielder made no secret of where his loyalties lie. "I hope Ghana beat them," he added with a smile.

The Black Stars face England in their second group match on June 23, following their opener against Panama on June 17. Ghana will round off their group campaign against Croatia on June 27.

For Essien, the clash is personal, but his respect for England's talent pool is clear. Now, he will be watching and hoping that Ghana can spring a surprise against one of the tournament favourites. 🇬🇭🏴
