World Cup 2026: Michael Essien backs Sulemana to deliver for Black Stars

Former Ghana international Michael Essien has backed Kamaldeen Sulemana to translate his natural gifts into match-winning performances for the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

"Sulemana is a great talent. I managed to see him here, and he's got a lot of qualities in him. He's a good dribbler, he's very fast, and he's quite strong," Essien said.

"Hopefully, he can bring that on board. He has to feel free and be himself when he's on the pitch, then the rest will come."

The 25-year-old has struggled for consistent game time at Atalanta and has faced criticism over his recent form, but he remains an important figure for the national team. Essien's message is one of encouragement: the talent is there—now it's about trusting it.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto. With a new head coach expected soon, Sulemana could be poised for a defining tournament if he heeds Essien's advice.
