Who replaces Thomas Partey? Carlos Queiroz faces key midfield decision against Panama
· GhanaSoccernetThomas Partey's absence has left Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz with his biggest tactical decision ahead of the Black Stars' opening 2026 FIFA World Cup clash against Panama, but his only match in charge offers a strong indication of how he could reshape the midfield.
The Villarreal midfielder was ruled out after losing his appeal against Canada's decision to deny him entry into the country, forcing Queiroz to rethink the heart of his team just hours before kickoff.
In Ghana's only warm-up match before the World Cup, a 1-1 draw against Wales in Cardiff, Queiroz started Partey alongside Elisha Owusu in a double pivot, with Kwasi Sibo and Caleb Yirenkyi both beginning on the bench.
When Partey was substituted in the second half, it was Kwasi Sibo who came on to replace him, maintaining the team's midfield structure. Later in the game, Caleb Yirenkyi replaced Elisha Owusu and went on to score Ghana's equaliser with an impressive finish.
Those substitutions have provided an important clue ahead of the Panama encounter.
Sibo appears the natural replacement for Partey in the deeper midfield role, having already been trusted in that position by Queiroz. The Real Oviedo midfielder enjoyed an outstanding club season and offers the physicality and defensive discipline required in the double pivot.
The bigger question is whether Queiroz keeps Elisha Owusu alongside Sibo or rewards Yirenkyi for his impact against Wales.
Yirenkyi's energetic display and goal strengthened his case for a starting place, but his introduction for Owusu suggests Queiroz sees him as a more progressive midfielder capable of influencing the game further forward rather than operating as a holding player.
Should the Portuguese coach stick to the blueprint he used against Wales, Sibo is expected to replace Partey directly, while Owusu retains his place. However, Yirenkyi's form has given Queiroz a genuine selection dilemma ahead of one of Ghana's biggest matches in recent years.
Whatever the final decision, replacing Partey's experience and leadership will require a collective effort as the Black Stars seek the perfect start to their World Cup campaign.
