2026 World Cup: Godwin Attram praises GFA's decision to appoint Carlos Carlos for Black Stars coaching job

Former Ghana striker Godwin Attram has commended the Ghana Football Association's decision to appoint Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach.

The veteran Portugese gaffer was confirmed as the head coach of the senior national team following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March earlier this year.

Addo was releived off from his job after losing back-to-back against Austria and Germany in prepartory games ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, Attram believes the appointment of Queiroz could prove a turning point to transform the mood and tactical discipline of the side.

“The FA did well to appoint him, and we hope that whatever the country wants, he will deliver,” Attram said.

Asked whether Ghana could survive one of the tournament’s most demanding groups, the retired striker-turned coach refused to entertain fear. “Why not?” he replied.

“At the end of the day, it’s just football, and if we prepare ourselves very well, in tune with whatever the players must do, I’m very sure we will qualify out of the group," Attram added.

The Black Stars will intensify their preparations for the Mundial when they face Wales on June 2 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the global tournament and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The Black Stars will open their Group L campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17, before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. They will wrap up their group stage fixtures against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on June 27.

After consecutive group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups in Brazil and Qatar, Ghana will be targeting a return to the knockout rounds for the first time in over a decade.

Meanwhile, Carlos Queiroz has announced a 28-man provisional squad with the final squad set to be confirmed on June 1.
