Only two home-based players included in Ghana's World Cup camp squad

The Ghana Premier League has received limited representation in Carlos Queiroz's squad for the Black Stars' World Cup preparation camp and upcoming international friendly against Wales, with Hearts of Oak goalkeepers Benjamin Asare and Solomon Agbasi the only home-based players selected.

Queiroz named a 28-man squad for the camp in Cardiff as Ghana begin final preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The inclusion of only two domestic-based players is likely to disappoint many followers of the local league, who had expected a greater number of standout performers from the Ghana Premier League to be rewarded with call-ups.

With the final 26-man squad for the World Cup set to be selected from the current group, several players who had impressed throughout the domestic season now appear unlikely to make the tournament roster unless changes are made before the final squad submission.

Benjamin Asare's inclusion comes as little surprise after the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper established himself as Ghana's first-choice goalkeeper during the World Cup qualifying campaign. Agbasi, his club teammate, also earned a place in the squad following his consistent performances for the Phobians.

The remainder of the squad is dominated by players based in Europe and other foreign leagues, including returning stars Baba Rahman, Ernest Nuamah, Abdul Mumin, Augustine Boakye and Alidu Seidu.

The Black Stars opened camp at Dragon Park in Cardiff on Monday and will face Wales in an international friendly on June 2 before heading to the World Cup.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L, where they will take on Panama in Toronto before facing England in Boston and Croatia in Philadelphia. The tournament squad will be trimmed to 26 players before the start of the competition.
