Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has expressed satisfaction with his team’s preparations ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing their recent training camp as productive despite facing logistical setbacks.
The senior women’s national team have been based in Accra for the June international window after withdrawing from a planned three-nation tournament in Tanzania, which was originally intended to sharpen their readiness for the continental showpiece.
During their stay in Ghana, the Black Queens tested themselves in a series of friendly matches, including a clash against reigning Ghana women’s champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies and a game against the Greater Accra Elite U-15 boys team, designed to assess intensity and match fitness.
Björkegren said the team made the most of the situation despite not securing their preferred level of opposition.
“We preferred to play against a national team, but we found out we couldn’t do it. We made the best of the situation,” he said.
He also highlighted the value of the camp beyond football, noting the importance of the players reconnecting with the local environment.
“We haven’t been in Ghana that much, so I felt it was a great opportunity for the players to be here, especially because the biggest part of the group plays abroad. So to be here in Ghana, eat Ghanaian food and play some games against local teams, I think it’s perfect,” he added.
“I see this camp as very positive in the preparations for the WAFCON.”
The Black Queens have now concluded their Accra training camp but are expected to regroup next month for a pre-tournament camp in Morocco.
Ghana has been drawn in Group D of the tournament alongside Cameroon, Cape Verde and Mali.
