World Cup 2026: I strongly believe Carlos Queiroz will guide Black Stars to success - Charles Akonnor
· GhanaSoccernetFormer Ghana coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has thrown his support behind the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, expressing confidence that the team is well-placed to compete on football’s biggest stage.
The tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, will see Ghana feature in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
Akonnor, who currently leads Gor Mahia, urged supporters to trust the technical leadership and avoid excessive criticism over squad selection, insisting that the coach and his staff know what is required for success.
"I believe we have appointed an experienced coach, someone who has seen it all. In fact, the players he has selected for the World Cup clearly show his experience," Akonnor said.
He praised the current setup as experienced and well-prepared, suggesting that the selected players reflect sound judgement and a clear understanding of international competition.
"We shouldn't be overly worried about the squad. I know there are thousands of coaches in Ghana, and everyone will have their own opinion. I believe we should leave the decision-making to him, especially on matters of selection."
Akonnor also called for stronger backing from fans, saying the team would benefit more from encouragement than scrutiny at this stage of preparations.
"What we need to do now is support him with a positive spirit," he added.
He addressed the long-standing debate over player selection bias, particularly the preference for footballers based in Europe’s top leagues, arguing that domestic and lesser-known players also deserve recognition for their performances.
"Sometimes we give too much respect to players from the Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A. Our boys are also doing well, and we must believe in them."
Despite Ghana’s group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Akonnor remains optimistic, insisting he fully believes in the current squad’s ability to make an impact.
"I strongly believe in this team, and I know they will do well."
Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final group match will be against Croatia on June 27.
The Black Stars, under coach Carlos Queiroz, will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010.
