Former Ghana international Michael Essien has warned that the Black Stars face a daunting task at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, labeling their draw as a "tough group" following the tournament's official pairings.

The midfield legend, speaking to FIFA.com, reacted to Ghana being placed in Group L alongside footballing heavyweights England and Croatia, as well as Panama.

Essien, who represented Ghana at two World Cup finals, emphasized that while the opposition is formidable, the team must maintain a professional and clinical approach to progress.

The Black Stars are scheduled to open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing a high-profile clash with England on June 23 and concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Essien noted that tournament football is famously unpredictable, suggesting that Ghana’s success will depend on their ability to focus on the immediate task at hand.

"That's a tough group. But there's always tough games to play, and it's up to you to win them. They should take every game as it comes and do their best. It's a tournament – anything can happen. You just have to make sure you win your games and keep moving. Let's see what they can do."

Ghana is without a head coach after the sacking of Otto Addo with 64 days to the start of the World Cup.

The GFA is set to meet this week to deliberate on who becomes the next coach.
