'Overlooked' Derrick Kohn rallies behind Black Stars ahead of World Cup
· GhanaSoccernetDerrick Köhn has put the disappointment of missing out on Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad behind him, choosing instead to rally behind the Black Stars as they prepare for their latest campaign on football’s grandest stage.
The left-back was among the most talked-about omissions when head coach Carlos Queiroz named his final squad for the tournament in North America.
His exclusion generated considerable discussion among supporters, with many questioning the decision after the defender’s recent involvement with the national team and growing reputation as a reliable option on the left side of defence.
While the setback could easily have led to frustration, Köhn has responded with maturity, sending a goodwill message to his teammates and Ghanaian supporters ahead of the tournament.
Instead, Queiroz opted for alternative options as he trimmed his provisional squad to the final group that will represent the country at the tournament.
Despite the disappointment, Köhn has made it clear that his priority remains the success of the national team.
“Wishing my teammates and all Ghanaian fans a successful World Cup. I will be supporting the team and wishing the boys all the best,” he wrote on his Instagram story.
With the squad now finalised, attention has shifted fully to Ghana’s preparations for the tournament. The Black Stars are currently putting the finishing touches to their World Cup plans and will first face Wales in an international friendly on Tuesday, June 2, before turning their focus to the group stage.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, presenting a demanding route to the knockout rounds. The opening fixtures are expected to test the team’s credentials as they seek to make a significant impact on the global stage.
