World Cup 2026: Black Queens lead nationwide support as Black Stars brace for Panama clash
· GhanaSoccernetGhana’s women’s national team, the Black Queens, have sent a powerful message of solidarity to the Black Stars ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Panama.
In a video shared on the handles of the Women's national team, players of the Black Queens uttered words of support to the four-time African champions, who are set to kick off their fifth World Cup campaign.
The Black Stars have touched down in Toronto to a rapturous welcome, holding their final training session at BMO Field on Tuesday evening ahead of Wednesday’s crucial Group L fixture.
The squad, under the guidance of veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, is aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final run in 2010.
Queiroz, who was appointed in a late change after Otto Addo’s dismissal, has named a 26-man squad featuring 15 debutants, with the team facing a challenging group that includes England and Croatia.
However, the build-up has been overshadowed by the absence of deputy captain Thomas Partey. The midfielder has been denied entry to Canada due to his ongoing legal proceedings in the UK, where he faces multiple charges.
He is set to miss the Panama opener, with the Ghanaian government filing a legal challenge against the decision in a Canadian court on Tuesday.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has insisted that every available diplomatic avenue is being explored to secure his participation in the tournament.
Despite the disruptions, GFA boss Kurt Okraku has backed the team to “crush” their group opponents, while captain Jordan Ayew has called for prayers and unity as the nation rallies behind the Black Stars.
