Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has called for unity and trust as he battles four other shot-stoppers for a spot in Ghana's final World Cup squad while also reflecting on his costly error in the recent friendly defeat to Mexico.

Asare, who has been Ghana's first-choice goalkeeper, made a high-profile mistake just two minutes into the Mexico game, gifting the opposition the opening goal. The error raised questions about his position, but the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper remains focused on redemption.

"Football, we have to accept that mistakes do happen, but that does not mean it is the end of it because there are a lot of matches ahead," Asare said ahead of Ghana's friendly against Wales on June 2.

With five goalkeepers currently in camp – Asare, Lawrence Ati Zigi, Solomon Agbasi, Joseph Anang, and Paul Reverson – only three are expected to make the final 26-man squad, which will be announced on June 1. The competition has been intense, with a new goalkeepers' trainer also adjusting the department to Queiroz's methods.

"Every coach has their style and tactical play. What you were taught by your previous coach could be different, but as a player you need to follow the instructions and put in your best every time," Asare said.

Despite the battle for the number one jersey, Asare stressed the importance of collective success. "If the coach starts another goalkeeper, it doesn't mean that because I'm the number one, I should be angry. We have to stay prayerful and united for collective success."

With the Wales friendly serving as the final audition before the World Cup, Asare and his fellow goalkeepers know that every save and decision counts.

Ghana open their Group L campaign against Panama on June 17. For Asare, the goal is simple: prove his worth, earn the trust of Ghanaians, and help the Black Stars succeed on the biggest stage.
