World Cup 2026: Jordan Ayew urges fans to keep believing after Ghana victory over Panama
· GhanaSoccernetGhana captain Jordan Ayew has called on supporters to continue backing the Black Stars after their dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars secured all three points thanks to Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time winner in Toronto, where Ghana overcame a spirited Panama side in challenging conditions.
Panama looked the more dangerous team for long periods and nearly opened the scoring on several occasions. Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi was instrumental before being replaced at half-time after suffering a collision late in the first half.
The African side improved after the interval and gradually grew into the contest. Jonas Adjetey went close with a header before Yirenkyi eventually broke the deadlock in added time.
Ayew acknowledged that Ghana had to remain patient throughout a difficult encounter before capitalising on their opportunity.
"When our chances came, we took them. Obviously, we needed to be patient. We knew they would get tired.
"Obviously, football is like that. Sometimes you have difficult spells, but you just need to stay in the game. That's what we did."
The Leicester City forward also delivered a message to Ghanaian supporters following the victory.
"They [the fans] should keep on pushing. Believe in the team. We will do our best to make something special."
The win gives Ghana an early advantage in Group L as they prepare for a highly anticipated clash against England.
