GFA Vice capo Mark Addo applauds Daniel Laryea's AFCON masterclass, sets Ghanaian referee as gold standard
· GhanaSoccernetThe Vice-President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mark Addo, has lavished high praise on Ghana’s foremost referee, Daniel Nii Laryea, following his exceptional showing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, describing him as a benchmark for excellence in officiating.
Laryea emerged as one of the tournament’s most trusted officials, crowning a stellar campaign by taking charge of the heavyweight semi-final clash between host nation Morocco and Nigeria at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
The accomplished Ghanaian was among the 23 match officials awarded FIFA badges for the 2026 season at a short but symbolic ceremony held at the Ghana Football Association headquarters on Tuesday, January 20, 2026. His name was met with a standing ovation, a clear reflection of the pride and admiration for his accomplishments on the continental stage.
Addressing the gathering, Vice-President Mark Addo singled out Laryea for special commendation, urging other referees to draw inspiration from his professionalism, consistency and commitment to excellence.
“I want to use this opportunity to congratulate Daniel,” Addo stated. “You did a great job in Morocco and we are very proud of you. This is the level of performance we expect from all of you. Let Daniel’s performance serve as a guide and motivation to strive for the very best.”
Laryea’s AFCON assignment extended beyond the semi-final. He also officiated the Group-stage encounter between Algeria and Burkina Faso and later served as Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the quarter-final showdown between Morocco and Cameroon, highlighting the immense confidence reposed in him by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Now back on home soil, Laryea is set to resume duties in the Ghana Premier League, where his wealth of international experience is expected to further enhance officiating standards.
