Ghana will probably get a tough group at the World Cup – Otto Addo

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo says he is bracing for a difficult draw when Ghana’s group opponents for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are revealed on December 5 in Washington.

The 50-year-old tactician, who recently guided Ghana to their fifth World Cup appearance, acknowledged that the team’s current FIFA ranking makes the likelihood of facing top-seeded nations in the group stage almost certain.

Ghana currently sits 75th in the world as of October 16, 2025.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Addo said his focus is on preparing his players mentally and tactically to compete against stronger opposition.

“I know that at the moment Ghana is not ranked high so probably we will get a tough group, so we have to expect that we get tougher opponents in our group and we have to deal with it,” he said.

Despite the potential challenge, the former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach expressed optimism about Ghana’s chances and emphasised the need for the team to progress beyond the first round.

“We will see what we will get and I’m excited about that. For me, the most important thing is to overcome the group stage,” Addo added.

The Black Stars will discover their group-stage opponents at the official FIFA World Cup draw on December 5.
