World Cup 2026: Timing of Carlos Queiroz's appointment not out of order - Sports Minister Kofi Adams

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has defended the decision to appoint Carlos Queiroz as head coach of Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz, 73, was confirmed in April following the dismissal of Otto Addo, who had led the Black Stars to qualification for the tournament but was relieved of his duties after consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany in March.

Speaking on TV3, Mr Adams dismissed concerns over the timing of the appointment, insisting it is not unusual for a new coach to take charge close to a major tournament.

"Choosing a head coach a few months before the tournament is not out of place," he said.

The former Egypt, Iran and Colombia boss has been tasked with guiding Ghana beyond the group stage at the World Cup for the first time since 2010.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the global tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final group match comes against Croatia on June 27.
