Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei has stressed that Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against Mexico goes beyond routine preparations, describing it as a key opportunity for players to prove their quality and mentality on the global stage.

Ghana will face the North American side on May 22 as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Ofei highlighted the importance of the match in assessing both established and emerging talents within the squad.

“This match represents more than just a game for us. It is an opportunity for these players to demonstrate the level of talent, character, discipline, and potential that exists within Ghanaian football,” Ofei told Flashscore.

He added: “We believe strongly in creating opportunities for players who are performing consistently and showing the right mentality.”

Head coach Carlos Queiroz has named a 23-man squad for the fixture, featuring 15 debutants alongside six locally based players. The selection is expected to offer valuable international exposure to younger members of the team as Ghana continues its preparations for future assignments.

Following the clash with Mexico, the Black Stars will take on Wales on June 2 in their final preparatory match before heading into the World Cup.
