'He can play on both sides' – Guardiola eager to unlock Antoine Semenyo’s versatility at Man City

Pep Guardiola is optimistic that Antoine Semenyo’s adaptability across the front line will quickly become a valuable asset for Manchester City, as the club looks to navigate a demanding phase of the season.

The City manager believes the winger’s ability to operate in multiple attacking roles fits seamlessly into his tactical framework and will allow him to make an immediate impact.

Guardiola’s confidence stems from both Semenyo’s skill set and the environment he is stepping into at the Etihad Stadium.

With injuries disrupting the squad and several players absent due to the Africa Cup of Nations, City have been forced to manage a tight rotation in January.

Semenyo’s arrival is therefore seen as timely rather than transitional, with expectations that he will be involved straight away.

The 26-year-old’s profile is one Guardiola knows well from his time at Bournemouth, and the City boss made clear what attracted him to the signing.

“Everyone knows the quality. We have seen how he plays for Bournemouth. He can play on both sides, right and left. He uses both legs unbelievably. He is a striker who can play with his pace. He knows the Premier League.”

Semenyo has underlined his long-term commitment by signing a five-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him at City until 2031.

He has been included in the squad for Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Exeter City and is also eligible for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg away to Newcastle.
