CAF bans and fines Senegal coach Pape Thiaw $100,000 for role in chaotic AFCON 2025 final
· GhanaSoccernetThe Confederation of African Football’s Disciplinary Board have cracked their whip, slapping Senegal coach Pape Thiaw with a five match ban and a fine of $100,000 for role in the chaotic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.
The crucial final saw the Taranga Lions walked-off the pitch for 17 minutes orchestrated by Thiaw in protest against a penalty awarded to Morocco in the final, held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
With Sadio Mane intervening, Senegal returned for the continuation of the final, where the Taranga Lions emerged as the champions after extra-time. Midfielder Pape Gueye emerged as the hero after netting a solo goal to inspire Senegal to victory after Brahim Diaz had missed the crucial penalty kick.
After a thorough review, the continental football governing body (CAF) has slapped Thiaw with a five game ban and a $100,000 fine.
A statement from CAF reads, “To suspend Mr Pape Bouna Thiaw, the Head Coach of the Senegalese National Team, for five (5) official CAF matches for his unsporting conduct in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play and integrity and for bringing the game into disrepute”
“Mr Pape Bouna Thiaw was also fined USD 100,000.” the statement added.
Meanwhile, Thiaw is expected to appeal against CAF’s ruling in the coming days.
