World Cup 2026: American embassy attempted to deny Thomas Partey a visa to play in global competition
· GhanaSoccernetGhana's Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has revealed that Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey encountered difficulties in securing a visa to the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The revelation comes amid reports suggesting the Villarreal midfielder could face travel complications for Ghana's Group Stage fixture against Panama in Canada on June 17.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News, the Sports Minister clarified that while Partey previously experienced challenges obtaining a visa to the United States, the issue has since been resolved.
"I am not aware that he has been denied a visa. I knew his previous visa to the United States had some challenges, but he has since been issued a visa to be able to enter the United States, and I am unaware that he has been denied a visa to Canada. No, not that I'm aware," Adams stated.
The Minister further explained that he has not received any official communication indicating that Partey has been denied entry into Canada or any of the host nations for the tournament.
"I don't think if any such thing had happened, they would have communicated to me as Minister for Sports and Recreation. I haven't received any such communication. I've been in touch with the FA and the management who are currently in the United States," he added.
The comments come as speculation continues over Partey's participation in the World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The former Arsenal midfielder is currently facing multiple criminal charges in the United Kingdom and is scheduled to stand trial at Southwark Crown Court in London. The case remains ongoing.
Partey has consistently denied all allegations through his legal representatives.
Earlier this year, his lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, reiterated his position, stating: "Thomas Partey continues to deny all charges against him. He has cooperated fully with the police throughout. Given that legal proceedings are ongoing, there will be no further comment."
Under the conditions of his bail, Partey is required to notify authorities of any plans to travel abroad.
