World Cup 2026: 'We are competitors, not heavy favourites' – England coach Thomas Tuchel
· GhanaSoccernetEngland manager Thomas Tuchel has rejected the "heavy favourites" tag ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, instead describing his side as "competitors and challengers" as they prepare for a tricky Group L campaign.
Addressing reporters at a news conference, the German tactician acknowledged England's pedigree – two consecutive European Championship finals, a World Cup semi-final, and a quarter-final – but insisted the Three Lions are not the team to beat.
"If you get to two Euro finals and reach semi-finals and quarter-finals of the World Cup, then you are there – then you can win it." We see ourselves as competitors and challengers. We want to go all the way, but I don't think we are the heavy favourites," Tuchel said.
Tuchel also provided encouraging fitness updates on Bukayo Saka and John Stones, both of whom dealt with extensive injuries during the 2025-26 season. The pair is expected to be available for England's group stage matches.
England have been drawn in Group L alongside Ghana, Croatia, and Panama. They opened their preparations with a 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand and will face Costa Rica on June 10 in their final warm-up match before the tournament.
Despite downplaying the favourites tag, Tuchel made it clear that his team believes in their ability to go all the way.
"You can win it, of course. That's what we want to do. We know what it takes, and it also requires a calm mindset and focus on our steps. I have belief. We all have belief and a dream."
England boast a squad packed with talent, including Europe's leading goalscorer Harry Kane and a quartet of Premier League champions from Arsenal, including Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze. Yet Tuchel remains focused on the process, not the hype.
For England, the World Cup journey begins on June 23 in Boston against Ghana. The Three Lions will be expected to progress, but their manager is taking nothing for granted.
