'He is a natural talent' – Asamoah Gyan hails Caleb Yirenkyi after Wales goal
· GhanaSoccernetFormer Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has heaped praise on young defender Caleb Yirenkyi following his impressive performance and goal for the Black Stars in their friendly against Wales.
Speaking after the match, Gyan described the 20-year-old as a natural talent with incredible abilities, highlighting not just his goal but his overall contribution on the pitch.
"Caleb Yirenkyi is a natural talent. He is rising up. He is very, very incredible. Yesterday, everybody saw what he did. Not only the goal, but his positioning, his passing, the way he follows attack and everything. I think he is an all-round player," Gyan said.
The former Black Stars captain also expressed pride in seeing Yirenkyi wear the number 3 shirt and score his first goal for Ghana, drawing a parallel to Jonathan Mensah, who also scored his first national team goal in the same jersey.
"Wearing the number 3 shirt and also scoring a goal. You know this isn't the first time. Jonathan Mensah also scored his first goal in the number 3 shirt. Wearing the number 3 shirt, I feel proud," he added.
Yirenkyi's goal came in Ghana's final warm-up match ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. For Gyan, the young defender's emergence is a promising sign for Ghana's future.
