Thomas Partey need to improve his performance ahead of 2026 World Cup - Augustine Arhinful

Former Ghana international Augustine Arhinful has called on Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey to improve his performances as Ghana intensifies preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Arhinful's comments follow Ghana's 1-1 draw with Wales in an international friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, where Partey struggled to make his usual influence in midfield.

The former Arsenal midfielder endured a challenging first half and was fortunate to avoid a second booking after receiving a yellow card in the 30th minute. Partey was eventually withdrawn at halftime, with Kwasi Sibo replacing him for the second period.

Assessing the midfielder's display, Arhinful expressed concern over Partey's physical condition and urged the technical team to help him regain peak fitness before the World Cup begins.

Speaking to Sporty FM, the former Black Stars striker suggested that the 32-year-old has fallen short of his expected standards and needs to rediscover his sharpness ahead of the tournament.

“We need to bring Thomas Partey up to speed. He was lucky not to have been sent off against Wales. I can see that he’s put on some weight,” Arhinful said.

With the World Cup fast approaching, Ghana's coaching staff will be hoping key players such as Partey can reach top form before the tournament kicks off in North America.

The Black Stars will round off their preparations with a friendly match against Jamaica on June 10 before departing for the United States, Canada and Mexico for the global showpiece.

Ghana will open their Group L campaign against Panama on June 17 before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

The four-time African champions will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage and reach the knockout rounds for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
