2026 World Cup: GFA explains omission of Joseph Paintsil and Derick Köhn from Black Stars squad
· GhanaSoccernetCommunications Director of the Ghana Football Association, Henry Asante Twum, has defended the decision to leave out Joseph Paintsil and Derrick Köhn from the Black Stars’ provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The two players were omitted from head coach Carlos Queiroz’s 28-man list, a decision that has triggered debate among supporters and sections of the media.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Asante Twum acknowledged the quality of both players but stressed that squad selection rules meant difficult choices had to be made, with only 26 players expected to make the final tournament roster.
“Joseph Paintsil is a good player and has given a good account of himself since his debut call-up," he said.
“Derrick Köhn was also impressive against Germany, where he provided an assist, but only 26 players can make the final squad," Asante Twum added.
Queiroz is expected to announce the final Black Stars squad on June 1, before the team faces Wales in a warm-up match on June 2 at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Ghana, set for its fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, and concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
