Nigeria’s Super Eagles advanced to the final of the African Playoffs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday after a commanding 4-1 victory over Gabon in extra time.

The encounter, held at the Stade Prince Moulay Hassan in Rabat, saw Nigeria dominate the first half, creating several clear chances.

Victor Osimhen came closest with a powerful header that was brilliantly saved by Gabon goalkeeper Loyce Mbabe.

Gabon appealed for a penalty later in the half after a shirt-pulling incident inside the Nigerian box, but following a VAR review, the referee waved play on.

After the break, Gabon looked stronger and applied sustained pressure, but failed to convert their momentum into goals.

They were punished in the 76th minute when Akor Adams capitalised on a defensive error to round the goalkeeper and slot home the opener.

The Panthers hit back late on through Mario Lemina’s 89th-minute equaliser, forcing the game into extra time.

Nigeria responded with renewed energy in the added period. Chidera Ejuke restored the lead in the 97th minute with a fine finish after an excellent assist from Wilfred Ndidi, before Victor Osimhen scored a brace later on to seal a 4-1 win for the Super Eagles.

The result sends the Super Eagles into the final, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final between Cameroon and DR Congo.

Victory in that clash will earn Nigeria a place in the intercontinental playoff for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
