World Cup 2026: Andre Ayew's hopes for swan song fizzles out, excluded from Ghana's final squad
· GhanaSoccernetFormer Ghana captain Andre Ayew has been excluded from the Black Stars' final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending his hopes of making a fourth appearance at football's biggest tournament.
The 36-year-old had been pushing for a return to the national team after being absent from the Black Stars setup since the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire. However, head coach Carlos Queiroz opted not to include the veteran forward in his final selection for the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Ayew was hoping to cap off his illustrious international career with one final appearance on the World Cup stage, having previously represented Ghana at the 2010, 2014 and 2022 editions of the tournament.
A place in the squad would have further strengthened his legacy as one of Ghana's greatest players.
The former captain has scored three World Cup goals during his career and was aiming to close the gap on Ghana's all-time World Cup leading scorer, Asamoah Gyan, who netted six times across three tournaments.
Despite his international absence, Ayew enjoyed a respectable campaign with Dutch side NAC Breda, making 17 appearances and scoring once during the season.
His experience and leadership had sparked speculation about a possible recall ahead of the Mundial, but it ultimately proved insufficient to earn a place in the final squad.
While Andre Ayew's World Cup journey appears to have come to an end, the Ayew family will still be represented at the tournament.
His younger brother and current Black Stars captain, Jordan Ayew, has been included in Ghana's squad and is expected to play a key role in the country's campaign.
