World Cup 2026: St Gallen star Ati-Zigi relishing another chance on football's biggest stage
· GhanaSoccernetSt Gallen goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi says playing at another FIFA World Cup is the fulfilment of a childhood dream as he prepares for the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The 29-year-old is in contention to start for the Black Stars after producing an impressive display in Ghana's warm-up friendly against Wales.
"As a kid, everyone dreams of playing on this big platform. For me, it's actually a big dream because you get to face big players. You get the atmosphere, a lot of people in the stadium, the support, the love. It's really a good experience for me, and I'm really looking forward to it," Ati-Zigi told GFA Media.
"I think it comes down to dedication to the game."
Ati-Zigi was Ghana's first-choice goalkeeper at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he impressed despite the Black Stars' group stage exit. His performances against Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay earned widespread praise.
Since that tournament, however, he has faced increased competition for the number one spot, with Benjamin Asare becoming Ghana's preferred goalkeeper during the World Cup qualifying campaign.
But Ati-Zigi may have played his way back into contention after an outstanding performance in the pre-World Cup friendly against Wales, making several important saves to help Ghana. His display is likely to have strengthened his case as Carlos Queiroz considers his starting lineup for the opening match.
Ghana begin their Group L campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto before taking on England on June 23 in Boston. The Black Stars conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia.
