World Cup 2026: Carlos Queiroz's experience will be key for Black Stars - GFA
· GhanaSoccernetCommunications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has expressed confidence that the vast experience of Carlos Queiroz will be a major asset to the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz, the former Iran and Egypt head coach, was appointed on a short-term basis following the dismissal of Otto Addo after Ghana suffered consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany in March.
With the national team struggling for consistency, Asante Twum believes the former Manchester United assistant coach brings the level of experience needed to steady the side ahead of the global tournament.
"We would have loved to have the coach (Otto Addo) who qualified us for the World Cup, but unfortunately, the results were not looking good, and after the search period, we appointed Carlos Queiroz as the new coach for the Black Stars," he told DW TV.
"He is very experienced, and that is what we needed at this moment," he added.
Queiroz has already begun work with the team, overseeing his first match in a 1-1 draw against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium.
The Black Stars are currently based in the United States as they continue preparations for the tournament, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.
Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Their final group match comes against Croatia on June 27.
Under Queiroz’s leadership, the four-time African champions will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010, having been eliminated at that round in both 2014 and 2022.
