World Cup 2026: Neymar's Brazil inclusion strengthens case for Andre Ayew's Ghana return

Neymar's surprise inclusion in Brazil's 2026 World Cup squad has reignited the debate over veteran players on the verge of international retirement, with many drawing parallels to Ghana's own Andre Ayew.

The 34-year-old Neymar, who has been plagued by injuries and inconsistent form, was named in Brazil's final 26-man squad for the tournament in North America. His selection, based on experience, leadership, and potential impact in key moments, has led to fresh calls for Ghana to consider a similar approach with Ayew.

Andre Ayew, Ghana's all-time leading appearance holder with 120 caps, last played for the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. After Otto Addo was reappointed as head coach in March 2024, Ayew was not called up again as Ghana opted to transition to younger players.

Ayew has remained active, recently joining Dutch Eredivisie side NAC Breda, where he has been training and featuring in matches.

His professionalism and experience could offer valuable depth and leadership in a World Cup squad, similar to what Brazil expects from Neymar.

While Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has emphasised a merit-based selection process, Neymar's inclusion for Brazil has sparked conversations about whether experience should outweigh club form when building a World Cup squad. For Ayew, the door may not be completely shut just yet.
