Ghana President Mahama urges Black Stars to go beyond World Cup semi-finals

President John Mahama has expressed confidence in Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing the team’s quality and potential to achieve what many would describe as unthinkable.

Speaking to SportyFM after Ghana secured qualification with a 1-0 victory over Comoros, Mahama referenced the historic run of Morocco in 2022, when they became the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals.

He also recalled Ghana’s near miss in 2010, when a last-minute penalty kick by Asamoah Gyan was missed in extra time, as the Black Stars were eliminated by Uruguay in the quarterfinals in South Africa.

“We must follow in the footsteps of Morocco by going beyond the semi-finals and, who knows, with fingers crossed, bring the World Cup trophy home to make Ghana and Africa proud,” Mahama said.

He called on all Ghanaians to unite behind the team. “We must all rally behind the Black Stars. We must support them to the hilt. Let’s not bring in any partisan or ethnic considerations. Let’s give them our full support,” he added.

Ghana will learn their group opponents on December 5, 2025, when the World Cup draw is held in Washington, D.C., but before that, the team will turn its attention to two high-profile friendly matches against Japan and South Korea next month.
