Argentine company gives free TVs to fans denied US visas for 2026 FIFA World Cup
· GhanaSoccernetDozens of Argentine football fans who were denied visas to travel to the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have received an unexpected consolation prize: a brand-new television.
Argentine conglomerate Newsan launched a promotional campaign through its electronics brand Noblex, offering free televisions to the first 100 people who presented proof that their U.S. visa applications had been rejected between January and June this year.
The campaign, advertised on Instagram with the slogan, "Give us your denied visa and take a free TV," attracted fans who had hoped to travel to North America to support Argentina.
Among those who benefited was 24-year-old professional video game player Tomas Vageller, who had dreamed of watching Lionel Messi at what many believe could be his final World Cup.
"I went to get a visa because we all think it will be Messi's last World Cup," Vageller said.
"It's very sad I won't be able to see it, but well, I'm leaving with a gift."
The marketing campaign comes amid growing concerns over visa restrictions affecting some supporters hoping to attend the tournament, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Despite Argentina entering the competition as defending world champions, World Cup excitement in the country has been more subdued than four years ago. Before the 2022 tournament in Qatar, many supporters viewed it as Messi's last realistic chance to lift football's biggest prize.
While hopes remain high that Argentina can successfully defend their title, many fans who had planned to follow the team in person have instead been forced to cheer from home.
For at least 100 of them, however, they will be doing so on a brand-new Noblex television.
