World Cup 2026: Black Stars is aiming at knockout qualification - Frederick Acheampong
· GhanaSoccernetExecutive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Frederick Acheampong, has outlined a clear objective for the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that reaching the knockout stage is the minimum expectation.
Ghana, who are aiming to progress beyond the group phase for the first time since 2010, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia in what is widely considered a demanding pool.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Acheampong expressed confidence that head coach Carlos Queiroz, appointed in April following the departure of Otto Addo in March, fully understands the responsibility placed on him.
“Our target is to reach the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. We believe Carlos Queiroz understands that objective,” Acheampong stated.
Queiroz has also publicly reinforced Ghana’s ambition, stressing that progression from the group stage remains non-negotiable for the technical team.
“At the end of 270 minutes, we have to qualify for the second round,” the 73-year-old stated after Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Wales in a recent international friendly.
Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final Group L fixture will be against Croatia on June 27.
