Antoine Semenyo is the face of Ghana football, says Asamoah Gyan
· GhanaSoccernetFormer Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan believes Antoine Semenyo will face more pressure than any other Black Stars player at the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to the expectations that come with his growing status in world football.
Speaking at PUMA's "Rolling Nations" event in New York, Gyan said Semenyo's club achievements have elevated him to a position where supporters expect him to deliver for Ghana on the biggest stage.
"There will be a lot of pressure on Semenyo going to the World Cup," Gyan said.
"People back home have questions about his performance when it comes to the national team, but as a former player and a striker, I have to be in his shoes."
The former Black Stars captain acknowledged that performing for club and country are different challenges, particularly when a player carries the expectations of an entire nation.
"There will be a bit of pressure because of where he's playing now. When you're playing for one of the best teams in the world and you come into the national team, there will be a lot of expectations."
Semenyo enters the tournament as one of Ghana's most recognisable footballers and is expected to play a leading role in attack, especially following the injury absence of Mohammed Kudus.
Gyan believes the spotlight on the forward is inevitable given his profile and recent rise in the game.
"He's the face of Ghana football right now because of his position and what he has done for himself."
The former striker, who remains Ghana's all-time leading scorer, suggested that Semenyo's performances could have a major influence on how far the Black Stars progress at the World Cup.
"Everything is going to depend on Antoine Semenyo for this World Cup."
Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England and Croatia in their remaining Group L matches, with Semenyo expected to be one of the central figures in Carlos Queiroz's plans.
