2026 World Cup: We want to make Ghanaians proud - Brandon Thomas-Asante
· GhanaSoccernetBlack Stars forward Brandon Thomas-Asante says the team is motivated to make Ghanaians proud as they build up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Ghana, four-time African champions, remain the only African nation to have reached the quarter-finals of the tournament in 2010 in South Africa.
However, their last two appearances in 2014 and 2022 ended in disappointment, with group-stage exits in Brazil and Qatar, respectively.
Now preparing in Cardiff ahead of this summer’s global showpiece, Coventry City striker Thomas-Asante insists there is a strong sense of responsibility within the squad.
He described representing Ghana at the World Cup as a lifelong dream and said the current group is fully aware of the expectations back home.
"It's always the biggest privilege, you know. It's something that, since I was young, when I was going to the games, to pray and to believe and to dream of achieving it one day, and now to be here is incredible," Thomas-Asante told the Ghana FA media.
"I know that there are a lot of people, you know, in Ghana and all around the world that are really wishing us well. So, we want to go and do them proud, and I understand how much it means, and it means so much to me personally," he added.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to announce Ghana’s final 26-man squad on June 1, before assessing the team’s readiness in a friendly against Wales on June 2 at the Cardiff City Stadium.
This will be Ghana’s fifth appearance at the World Cup. They have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.
The Black Stars begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before taking on England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. Their final group match comes against Croatia on June 27.
