BLADE RUNNER 2099 Trailer Reveals a World Where Replicants Have Taken Over and Humanity is Losing

Humanity has officially lost control in Blade Runner 2099, and the future isn't looking too good for our species. Prime Video has released the first full-length trailer for its upcoming sci-fi series, giving fans a better look at a world where Replicants have risen against their creators and won.

After debuting a brief teaser at San Diego Comic-Con in July, the series returned to New York Comic Con with a new trailer and some interesting details about where the story is headed.

The show takes place 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, and things have changed dramatically. The Replicant uprising that has been building throughout the franchise has finally happened, leaving humanity facing the possibility of extinction.

During the show's Saturday evening New York Comic Con panel, showrunner Silka Luisa explained how the series explores what happens when humanity realizes its days might be numbered.

“We are 50 years after [Blade Runner] 2049 and, bad news, the worst has happened. The replicant uprising that has been bubbling up in the films has taken place and the humans have lost. So the creations have surpassed their creators.

“And the series, the big question it asks is, ‘What happens when our time as a species ends?’ 2099 is taking place at a junction point when one species is ending and a new one is rising. The first film, something I loved about it, was that it was looking at mortality on a micro level.

“Roy Batty and the other replicants were fighting for more life. This show asks that same question but on a macro level. Mankind—what happens when we realize our time is running out? And are we going to accept that loss? Can we hold on to our humanity during it?”

That's an interesting direction for the franchise, especially since the original films focused so heavily on what it means to be human through the experiences of Replicants. Now humanity finds itself on the other side of that struggle, fighting to survive in a world controlled by its own creations.

The story follows Olwen, played by Michelle Yeoh, a Replicant Blade Runner who has only days left to live. She crosses paths with Cora, played by Hunter Schafer, a human fugitive disguising herself as a Replicant.

The unlikely pair joins forces to track down a runaway who possesses a dangerous secret. With humans and Replicants now occupying very different positions in society.

One familiar face fans shouldn't expect to see is Harrison Ford, who played Rick Deckard in director Ridley Scott's original Blade Runner in 1982 and returned for Denis Villeneuve's 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049.

Luisa previously confirmed that Ford won't be involved in the series, saying: “Harrison Ford is not in the show. I feel like as a Blade Runner fan, I would want to know that, so I’m just gonna be a full disclosure: I wish, but no.”

While it would have been cool to see Deckard again, I think Blade Runner 2049 gave his character a satisfying conclusion. There's plenty of room for new stories in this universe, and exploring what happens after Replicants overthrow humanity feels like a natural way to move the franchise forward.

I'm really looking forward to Blade Runner 2099. I've always loved the world of Blade Runner, and the idea of seeing how that world has evolved under Replicant control has me excited.

I'm hoping Prime Video delivers a great show that captures what made the original movies so compelling while giving us something new to get invested in.

Blade Runner 2099 premieres on Prime Video on November 25.
