AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Trailer Reveals Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom and the MCU Is Ready for War

Marvel Studios has finally dropped the first full trailer forAvengers: Doomsday, and after months of anticipation, fans can finally get a proper look at one of the MCU's biggest game-changing characters, Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

This has been one of the most talked-about Marvel projects in years, and while the trailer doesn't give away the movie's biggest secrets, it introduces several of the major players, teases some awesome visuals, and reminds audiences just how massive this story is going to be.

It's very much a "meet the players" kind of trailer, but there are still a lot of really cool shots sprinkled throughout that should have Marvel fans flipping out! I think It’s a strong first teaser trailer!

The movie marks the fifth chapter in the main Avengers saga, following The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

Like Infinity War and Endgame, the next two Avengers films are once again being directed by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, better known as the Russo Brothers, who are returning to steer Marvel's biggest crossover event.

Of course, the biggest attraction here is finally seeing Downey Jr. step into the role of Victor von Doom. After spending more than a decade defining the MCU as Tony Stark, watching him return as one of Marvel's greatest villains is still surreal.

Fans first learned about the casting during San Diego Comic-Con, and now we finally get to see what that decision actually looks like on screen.

The road to this point has certainly changed over the last few years. Marvel originally planned for the fifth Avengers movie to center on Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, but those plans were abandoned after the actor was fired in 2023 following legal issues.

The studio shifted directions, and Doctor Doom has now become the central threat leading into Marvel's next major crossover event.

The cast assembled for Avengers: Doomsday is absolutely packed with familiar faces from across the Marvel universe. Returning heroes include Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Letitia Wright as Black Panther, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Winston Duke as M'Baku, Lewis Pullman as Sentry, Danny Ramirez as Falcon, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor.

They're joined by Marvel's First Family, including Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm.

Then there are the returning X-Men legends, with Ian McKellen as Magneto, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Kelsey Grammer returning as Beast. Then there’s Channing Tatum as Gambit and Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent.

As trailers go, there are enough glimpses of action, character moments, and large-scale spectacle to remind everyone what's on the horizon without spoiling the surprises Marvel undoubtedly wants to keep under wraps.

I'm especially curious to see how fans react to Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom now that they've gotten their first real look at him. The casting announcement sparked plenty of debate when it was first revealed, and now audiences finally have footage to judge instead of just an idea. It'll be interesting to see if this trailer wins over skeptics or leaves fans wanting a little more.

Either way, Marvel has officially kicked off the marketing campaign, and excitement for Avengers: Doomsday is only going to grow from here.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following on December 17, 2027.
