Kathleen Kennedy Offers Update on Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling's STAR WARS Movie
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantAs previously reported, Shawn Levy is developing a new Star Warsmovie at Lucasfilm with Ryan Gosling stepping into the universe.
The Deadpool & Wolverine director’s Star Wars film has been in the works for some time, and while details have been scarce, Kathleen Kennedy recently offered an update on what’s going on with the film.
According to Lucasfilm’s President, Levy’s film will take place roughly five or six years after The Rise of Skywalker, so it will explore the post-Skywalker era.
Kennedy shared with Deadline: “It’s all post [the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that’ll take place post 9, maybe five or six years out. And Mandalorian really stands on its own because there, we’re dealing with a whole other era in the New Republic.
“We have other development going on in that space as well. So that’s the space that we’re pretty much focused on right at the moment, because obviously with Mandalorian we have a pretty good sense of where that’s going.
“And with this, it’s all pretty much new characters. We may bring some of the characters back from the sequel saga, but pretty much new characters.”
While there are no details on the story, fans are speculating about Gosling’s role. Will he be a Jedi? Bounty hunter? Rogue scoundrel? He’s got the versatility to fit into any of those archetypes.
While the film will primarily focus on new characters, Kennedy did leave the door open for sequel trilogy figures to reappear, which could mean Daisy Ridley’s Rey or other familiar faces making an appearance.
Levy’s Star Wars film could begin shooting as early as this year, which, if schedules align, could mean a potential release by summer 2027. That’s still speculative, but it could happen.
With Levy’s film shaping up and a full slate of projects in development, the galaxy far, far awayis about to ramp up in a big way.
